Cursing on campus unacceptable
Student unhappy with "vulgar" music played at BSA Picnic
Issue date: 5/2/08 Section: Opinion
I am writing today in response to the unbelievable activities that took place this past weekend. I was involved in the sunburn softball tournament, which went very well. A couple people were reprimanded for using inappropriate language on the field, due to the fact that many visitors, including family members were on campus. I was very pleased at the way it was handled, politely asking that we not use the language.
Later on in the afternoon, I was shocked when I was walking by the union with my 10 year old brother and my parents. The Black Student Alliance was having a get together in front of the union. The music that was being played was highly offensive, very vulgar, and completely inappropriate. I am not sure if the college itself was aware of this and permitted it, or if they just played the music on their own. It appeared that a dj was playing the music though, so the school must have known about it.
I do not appreciate the words that my brother was forced to listen to for the minute it took to walk through. Trying to distract him, I heard over 5 curse words, including the dreaded "N" word. How is that even close to appropriate for a college campus? A place where equality and fair treatment is encouraged, that type of language is unnecessary. I was very ashamed of this college for allowing such offensive material to be blasted throughout the campus. There is something about encouraging and promoting violence, sexually explicit material, and straight vulgar language, that has no business on this campus. Especially not blaring around the entire campus, and around one of the major gathering spots for many students and their families, the Union.

Although I am very troubled that you the "concerned student" would feel that way, what's more concerning is the fact that you knew what organization held the event yet could not voice your concerns directly to them during or after the event. (Continued…)
