This spring, a number of Bridges students are carrying a bit of extra confidence as they complete their first years. Ten Bridges students earned a fall semester grade point average of at least 3.0, but three of these young people earned a spot on our college Dean's List, including Robert Valentine, Talisa Davis, and Shayna Stewart.

Robert "Robby" Valentine, a member of SUNY Potsdam's Pointercounts, is a Music Education major who enrolled at Potsdam this fall, still seeking a place in Potsdam's acclaimed Crane School of Music. While working extensively with Dr. Kirk Dougherty to prepare for his December audition, Robby excelled in his Arts & Sciences curriculum. He's enjoyed the personal attention from the Bridges Director, Dr. Dougherty, and instructors such as First-Year Transitions Director, Louise Tyo stating: "The guidance that I received from Bridges staff was extremely helpful throughout the year."

Talisa Davis arrived at Potsdam College with an extensive Dance background and is declared as a Dance minor. Strongly considering a Psychology major, Talisa is enjoying her challenging Introduction to Psychology class. Already a successful high school student, Talisa has been recommended to the Potsdam Honors Program and seems excited by the opportunity to further challenge herself with her fall 2008 schedule.

Shayna Stewart credits a good deal of her success to the opportunities and discipline related to being a student-athlete at Potsdam. "As a member of the volleyball team, we arrived a week early and were able to form a social network early on. That took a lot of pressure off in terms of meeting people once the semester started." She also stated, "With volleyball, I've had to plan every day." Exercising good decision-making in how she socializes and really being thoughtful about where her time is going has helped her as well. She credits the Bridges Program with helping her to focus on time management throughout the year. Shayna is majoring in Childhood Education.

The SUNY Potsdam Bridges program is a campus-supported effort that is designed to assist selected freshmen in their transitions to college. Bridges students with strong ability are admitted to the college if they meet specific academic guidelines. The Bridges office is now in its tenth year as a part of SUNY Potsdam.
