Cortney Poirier broke out this year scoring 16.7 points per game. She led the Bears with 3.7 steals per game and 2.8 assists per game. Poirier should be on her way to the 1,000 point milestone next season as she is already over 750 in her career at Potsdam.
Poirier attributes her ability to get to the rim to her quick first step. Most of her preparation begins during the summer months by playing in a summer league near Plattsburgh. However, she remains humble about her athleticism.
She and teammate Hannah Fairchild have been playing together since high school, which contributes to her ability to communicate on offense. The team has begun to set higher goals for themselves, and having a player of her caliber is a good start.
On Monday, Poirier was named to the SUNYAC All Conference second team, which is a phenomenal accomplishment for any player, let alone a sophomore.
The Lady Bears Basketball team lost their first round SUNYAC Playoff game at New Paltz last week, 70-61.
