For students interested in completing an internship, they should know that it is not too late to plan for a summer 2008 opportunity. Many program deadlines will expire in March, but if you hurry into the office now we can help you in meeting those deadlines and securing an internship position for the summer. Students are eligible to receive credit in the summer for an internship, and our office offers four $1,000 scholarships to assist students in paying for credits. Applications are available in the office and are due by May 2. For those who are not prepared for a summer internship, it is not too early to start planning for the fall 2008 semester. Remember the best internships go fast, so plan early and get the internship of a lifetime.
Our volunteerism program is going strong this semester with the addition of the Big Brother/Big Sister program at the Lawrence Ave. Elementary School. Currently, we have 71 Littles paired up with SUNY Potsdam Bigs for the spring 2008 semester, and we will begin the recruitment process for fall beginning at the end of March. Flyers and emails will be distributed when recruitment begins with instructions on the application process. Students who are interested in getting volunteer experience this semester should contact the office to learn more about volunteer opportunities as requests for volunteers are always coming in to the office.
Looking ahead to the fall, students should be aware of the service-learning courses that are offered on campus and should look for the SL designated courses when registering for classes. Service-learning courses offer students the opportunity to take a class and participate in a service project throughout the semester. The service project varies by instructor and availability of courses is growing.
