Bears lose in SUNYAC final

The SUNY Potsdam men’ s lacrosse team saw its 2011 season come to an end Saturday, falling 16-3 at third-ranked Cortland in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament championship game.

The second-seeded Bears (8-9 overall), playing in the program’s first-ever SUNYAC Tournament final, were unable to sustain possession against the Red Dragons. Following the game, sophomores Robbie Ashlaw (North Syracuse, N.Y.), Rashaun Durden (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior Peter Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) of Potsdam were named to the All-Tournament team.

Cortland (15-2), which clinched the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, will seek its sixth Final Four appearance in the last six years and its third national title over that span.

The Red Dragons scored seven unanswered goals to start the first half before Pike made a brilliant move at the attack line to find senior Sean McAuliffe (Watertown, N.Y.) open in front of the net. McAuliffe netted his 31st goal of the season.

Pike tallied the Bears’ second score 10 minutes later after rebounding a loose ball in front of the net and rolling it past the goalie.

Senior Kevin Green (Penfield, N.Y.) added a man-up goal in the final minute of the contest, his 23rd of the season, assisted by sophomore Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse, N.Y.).

Senior Goalie Pat Corbine (Canton, N.Y.) took the loss in goal, finishing with 18 saves.

The Bears advanced to the SUNYAC title game after defeating third-seeded Geneseo 18-17 on Wednesday in a semifinal at Potsdam.
